Consequences of Father Absence for Children

Child Abuse:

v  Compared to living with both parents, living in a single parent home doubles the risk that a child will suffer physical, emotional, or educational neglect.

v  Premarital pregnancy, out-of-wedlock childbearing, and absent fathers are among the most common predictors of child abuse.

v  Compared with children in intact, two-parent families, children from disrupted families are at a much higher risk for physical or sexual abuse.

v  An analysis of child abuse cases in a nationally representative sample of 42 counties found that children from single-parent families are more likely to be victims of physical and sexual abuse than children who live with both biological parents. Compared to their peers living with both parents, children in single parent homes had:

  • a 77% greater risk of being physically abused
  • an 87% greater risk of being harmed by physical neglect
  • a 165 % greater risk of experiencing notable physical neglect
  • a 74 % greater risk of suffering from emotional neglect
  • an 80% greater risk of suffering serious injury as a result of abuse
  • overall, a 120% greater risk of being endangered by some type of child abuse.

Research confirms that the most significant factor in the life of a child is not race or family income, but whether the father is involved.

v  Sixty-three percent of youth that commit suicide are from fatherless homes

v  Ninety percent of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes

v  Eighty-five percent of all children that exhibit behavioral disorders come from fatherless homes

v  Eighty percent of rapist with displaced anger come from fatherless homes

v  Seventy-one percent of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes

v  Seventy-five percent of all adolescent patients in chemical abuse centers come from fatherless homes

v  Seventy percent of juveniles in state-operated institutions come from fatherless homes

v  Eighty-two percent of all youths sitting in prisons grew up in fatherless homes

v  Eighty-two percent of teenage girls who get pregnant come from fatherless homes.
